Yarraman MEG
Yarraman's history is linked to the timber industry. Yarraman
is in Rosalie Shire and is situated at the southern entrance
to the South Burnett region about a two hour drive from Brisbane.
Yarraman's MEG has been formed by the members of the Yarraman
Heritage Centre, which is located in Millar Street. Originally,
the building was the Sacred Heart Convent of the Sisters of
Mercy. The stove in the photograph shown here is stored at
the Heritage Centre, and came from a local property. However,
there is scant information concerning the kerosene stove.
Can you help? Do you know how the stove operates?
Extracts from the text Oral History:
One of the interesting stories from the Yarraman MEG relates
to the old Yarraman Powerhouse, which is now a private garage.
Charlie, who is the son of the first powerhouse manager, remembers
when there was a fire in the powerhouse in 1951. Around 350
homes were without power following the fire at the small diesel
powerhouse owned by Charlie's father. a mobile plant was obtained
from Brisbane for emergency duties.
In QEM's document collection is a letter, written to the
State Electricity Commission of Queensland in 1939. The writer
mentions the Yarraman powerhouse manager. The manager of the
local sawmill asked the powerhouse manager to remove the light
pole from the front of his factory. The powerhouse manager
'put his tung out at me and went on...' When Charlie was shown
the letter, he chuckled and said that he could imagine his
father doing that because his father was not afraid to tell
people what he was thinking.
