The exhibition reveals the history of New Farm Powerhouse
in Brisbane.
The story begins with the construction of the powerhouse
in 1926 and describes some of the building techniques.
Inside the powerhouse the perspective is enhanced with
images of
the workers shown alongside the powerful plant. Views
of the turbine hall and boiler room were generally limited
to
industry workers and official visitors. Many of the images
displayed offer an insight into this hidden world.
However, many members of the wider community were interested
in the powerhouse for varying reasons. Mounted on the
exhibition panels are sections of letters to the City
Council and the
powerhouse manager from nearby residents. Some relate
to requests for community groups to visit and others
reveal concerns regarding the soot and smoke nuisance. Overall,
the exhibition provides an interesting social commentary
on the working life of a coal-fired powerhouse and its
impact
on people ’s lives. This exhibition is available to tour. For more information
