Queensland Energy Heritage Image Gallery

Welcome to the launch of the Queensland Energy Heritage Image Gallery!

QEM are proud to introduce the first image gallery or photo library of its kind in Queensland and in Australia. The images we will present are dedicated to the history of energy in Queensland.

Among the initial collection displayed today, you will find images of 36 small outback townships, rural towns and cities geographically distributed throughout Queensland:

Atherton, Augathella, Barron Falls, Beaudesert, Bedourie, Birdsville, Blackall, Bowen,Charleville, Chinchilla, Cloncurry, Dalby, Dirranbandi, Goondiwindi, Hughenden, Ilfracombe, Innisfail, Jericho, Jundah, Karreya, Kingaroy, Longreach, Monto, Morven, Mossman, Murgon, Nambour, Richmond, Rockhampton, Roma, St George, Tara, Taroom, Thargomindah, Windorah and Wyandra.

You will find images of streetscapes with buildings; coal-, steam-, gas-, diesel- and water-powered generating stations, plant, switchboards and outdoor structures.

Later we will add Field Days, cooking shows and competitions, Electricity Showrooms and appliance demonstrations; Construction Gangs; Linesmen; meters - testing and reading; vehicles and transport; Offices – punch card operators and computers; the South Brisbane Gas Supply Industry and gas promotions; rural and industrial energy applications and sustainable energy projects.

I am curently busy writing the text, which will be gradually added to the images. Steven, our Museum Officer is preparing more photos for the Image Gallery. Since we are QEM's only employees, we are as busy as an octopus putting on stockings!

We hope you enjoy this first collection of historical energy images and will look forward patiently to our next release, which is scheduled to take place in November 2005. Please contact us with your comments on the current collection and your suggestions for future content. We would also like to hear from any past or present electricity and gas industry employees. Your memories and experiences are valuable and will help to build a comprehensive educational resource related to energy heritage in Queensland.

Dr. Jan King, Director, June 2005.

Stage Two Launched

Welcome to Stage Two of our Queensland Energy Heritage Image Gallery.

We have added 16 new images showing Queensland towns, rural and industrial scenes. New images can be viewed relating to Gatton, Ipswich, Laidley, Forest Hill, Daybro and Upper Coomera.

We are always keen to hear from people who used to live or still do live in any of the towns shown in the Energy Image Gallery and have memories of life before and after electricity became available to their town and home. Please contact us via one of our email addresses, director@energymuseum.com.au or info@energymuseum.com.au.
