Electric Memories

Electric Memories is a double-sided, free-standing exhibition with 3-D multi-media effects. The main theme is the social history of the electricity supply industry in Queensland.

There are a number of sections, each with a specific theme. ‘Out of the Darkness’ begins with early street lighting, methods of laying cables and erecting electricity poles. ‘Powerhouses’ provides a selection of historical photographs and stories from the late nineteenth century to the 1980s. Rural and outback Queensland features in this section. ‘Towers of Strength' portrays the history of electrical transmission from the use of wooden poles to steel towers, the work of construction gangs and addresses environmental issues. ‘Arteries of life’ and ‘Pathways to the Future’ concentrates on the impact of electricity on everyday life from the early to the late twentieth century.

This exhibition is available to tour. For more information contact Dr Jan King, Director, Queensland Energy Museum.
