Sister Museum Network

Queensland Energy Museum Inc (QEM) aims to establish a network of Sister Museums in Australia.

SISTER MUSEUMS will be formed by mutual agreement between QEM and other museums and historical societies, which contribute to the interpretation and preservation of Australia's energy history and heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.

THE SISTER MUSEUM NETWORK will enable the Sister Museums to contact each other and share information relevant to Australia 's energy history and heritage. The network will benefit the Sister Museums' staff and volunteers socially and professionally. In addition, the benefits will extend globally to present and future generations of researchers, students and individuals interested in Australia 's energy history and heritage.

Launch of QEM's First Sister Museum Agreement

At our Herston museum site, the first Sister Museum Agreement was signed between QEM and Longreach Shire Powerhouse Museum (LPM) in Longreach. It is an historical ‘first' for both museums and the first agreement of its kind in Queensland, possibly Australia.

The combined historical collections in the care of QEM and LPM have become the largest collection of objects, documents, photographs and film specifically related to energy heritage in the Southern Hemisphere.

Members of the QEM Management Committee; the Longreach Mayor, Councillor Pat Tanks; Gary Deakin, LPM's Museum Administration Officer; Dr. Jan King, QEM's Director; Steven Lippis, QEM's Museum Officer and a number of dedicated volunteers attended the launch and signing ceremony on Thursday 28 May 2005.

Following the signing, gifts and related museum information were exchanged and we had plenty of opportunity for networking over morning tea. We all expect that formalising the strong bond, which had already been established a number of years ago between the two museums, will provide an added stimulus for joint exhibitions. Jan and Gary are already planning the first one, so keep watching this space!

A Memories of Energy Group (MEG) was started at Longreach shortly after our Director Jan launched the MEG network. For some information from the Longreach MEG, go to the MEG Page.
