Collection Highlights

Regularly we will showcase an item from the museum collection.

We received samples of straight joints from Edison Street Tubes, which were laid in Brisbane in the 19th century to supply electricity to Parliament House.

The Edison 2-conductor street tube was the first underground electricity main laid in Brisbane, in 1884. The 3-conductor street tube, was installed in 1892. These Edison Street Tubes supplied the original electric lighting in Queensland's Parliament House in George Street.

These samples were located and recovered from William Street, Brisbane, in January 1992 by staff from the South East Queensland Electricity Board, and the Queensland Museum.
