Anniversaries of Electricity Supply to Towns in Queensland

Here is a selection of some of the towns, which celebrated the anniversary of the inauguration of the electricity supply from the local powerhouse. It is not known whether the towns mentioned or the relevant councils will have functions to mark the occasion.

 

During 2004 , the 50 th Anniversary came around for the following towns. The month and date signifies the inauguration of the supply.

Tambo, June 1954

Bollon, September 1954

Augathella, October 1954

Morven, October 1954

Yuleba, December 1954

It was the 80 th Anniversary of the inauguration of the electricity supply by the Mackay Council in April 2004, the Charleville Town Council in August 2004, Goondiwindi Town Council in September 2004 and for the Rockhampton City Council in August 2004. The Rockhampton Gas and Coke Co. Ltd commenced in 1892. When it was closed down, the city council took over the responsibility for electricity in August 1924, the same year as Mackay, Charleville and Goondiwindi inaugurated the respective supply.

The 80 th Anniversary of the inauguration of the supply for the Stanthorpe Shire Council occurred in December 2004, the original month of inauguration being December 1924.

2005 was the 50 th Anniversary of electricity for the following towns. The month and year signifies the date of the inauguration of the supply.

Wyandra, June 1955

Injune, June 1955

Normanton, October 1955

Cooktown, November1955

Irvinebank, December 1955

The Sarina Shire Council inaugurated the electricity supply in February 1935. Therefore, in February 2005 was the 70 th anniversary of electricity for Sarina.

2005 saw the 80 th Anniversary for the inauguration of the electricity supply by the Kingaroy Shire Council, which was in February 1925. Then in October 2005, it was the 80 th Anniversary of the inauguration of supply for Bowen.

It also was the 90 th Anniversary of the inauguration of the electricity undertaking by the Electric Supply Co. of Bundaberg Ltd in 2005.

Then in 2006 , the 50 th Anniversary of electricity for Wandoan (June 1956) and Boulia, (December 1956).

70 th Anniversary in 2006

Cloncurry Shire Council inaugurated the supply in 1936 as did Emerald Shire Council and Monto Shire Council.

 

80 th Anniversary in 2006

Tully - supply was inaugurated by the Tully Co-operative Sugar Milling Association Ltd in 1926. The plant was mainly used for the supply of power and lighting in the mill. When the mill was not crushing, power was supplied to the town by oil-driven plant.

Another 80 th Anniversary will fall for the Paroo Shire Council. The inauguration of the supply was in November 1926.

90 th Anniversary in 2006

The Roma Electric Light and Power Co Ltd inaugurated the supply in January 1916, which will make it the 90 th anniversary in January 2006.

Also in January 2006 was the 90 th Anniversary of the Gympie Electric Authority, which was inaugurated in January 1916. The Engineer and Manager was Mr. F.W. Bestman.

Then in December 2006, it was the 90 th Anniversary of the inauguration of electricity supply for Gladstone . The Gladstone Town Council inaugurated its supply in December 1916. The Engineer Manager was Mr. E.W Phillips.
